Windows XP not Responding – How to fix it?


Windows XP becomes unresponsive or freezes after selecting a program or App. There can be various reasons behind this issue. Here are some possible fixes that will probably resolve the issues with system unresponsiveness or hangs on Windows XP.

  • If you are on older version of Windows OS, make sure to update it first. The latest updates can fix various issues with Windows. You can also go for sfc/scannow as this fixes any corrupt drives or missing system files on Windows and helps to debug the problem. Open Run dialog and type in cmd and open it as Administrator. Next type in the command Sfc/scannow and hit enter. This will start scanning the system and fix all the corrupt or missing files on the system.

  • Open System configuration, press Win + R and type in msconfig. Uncheck all the Non-Microsoft programs at startup. Or try verifying which program is responsible for the system hang.

  • Undo all recent installations as they might be responsible for the problem. At times some programs don’t go with the OS properly and lead to various issues. Uninstall all the recent added Apps and see if the problem is fixed.
  • Download and install Microsoft Security essential and run a full system scan. But before you do that, disable any other Anti-virus installed on the system. Malwares are the prime suspect and has the ability to disable the system functions leading to explorer hang or freeze or makes the whole system blackout.
