Windows 8.1, the update for Windows 8 would be released as a preview on June 26, 2012 and Microsoft has already shared most of the details about that update. Although, Windows 8.1 is getting a lot of unique features like better customization, more apps, new tiles and many more but, one thing which is the best one in all Windows 8.1 updates in the gesture based scrolling in apps.
Eyesight gesture control
We know that Windows 8.1 would be getting a new Food & Drink app along with others which would be baked in OS which you launch it for the first time. Food & Drink app will provide you all tips about food and drinks from recipes and ingredients to place like restaurants etc. But, the most noticeable feature of the app is hands-free mode which would let you control your Windows 8.1 PC with Food & Drink app open without actually touching your device on touch screen or with mouse and keyboard.
Microsoft has included this awesome feature in Food & Drink app so, that you may not touch your device when your hands are full of something while cooking. This gesture based control would be helpful for those users as they would be able to scroll in the app easily and keep cooking their favorite food when their hands are dirty.
How this hands-free mode works?
Although, we don’t have much details in this matter since, the official preview is still to be launched later this month but, blogs who got their hands-on the preview report that the feature would work on normal hardware and nothing special is required. The gesture controls would work on any Windows 8.1 device with a traditional webcam and the Windows will recognize your gestures right from the webcam.
Is it possible?
You might be wondering how this is possible and the answer is simple – technology. We have seen many third party companies like Eyesight make gesture based controlling software for Windows and other devices which use your web cams to do tasks without the need to touch your device. Those companies achieved that task by using a special third party software but, Microsoft seems to have developed its own software which has been embedded in the Windows 8.1.
Good feature but, with limitations
It seems that Microsoft has limited the gesture based controlling in Windows 8.1 to just Food & Drink app but, the question is can third party apps use that technology? If yes, then we may soon see a new era of gesture based apps and games which would take the Windows 8.1 experience to another level.
In the last, we don’t have any more details about that awesome yet exciting feature of Windows 8.1 but, if the software giant can implement this in Food & Drink app then, it can also be used in other apps of Windows 8.1.
Are you excited to use this breathtaking feature in Windows 8.1 when it is released on June 26, 2013. I surely am anxious to get my hands on this awesome feature.
