Opera Next, the latest version of the Opera browser is based on the Chromium platform. Opera 15 or Opera Next as you may call it, adds a raft of new features to the desktop browsing experience. Most of the features are still under development but are expected to be released in the stable version in the future.
The address bar now features Search, showing results from multiple search engines. Opera has named the feature as ‘Smartbox‘. It lets you filter predictive results by search engine.
Though some new features have been added, few have been removed. One feature removal that might become noticeable right away is separation of the Opera Mail client M2 from the browser. You need to download it as a separate product from the same website to continue using it. Other removals:
- No RSS Page
- No availability of Opera Notes
- Bottom Bar with Page Zoom slider removed
- Opera config page not to be seen anymore
- Developer Tools Dragonfly replaced by Chromium Dev Tools
- Bookmarks Removed and New Feature Stash Included
On the other side, majority of the additions seem to be in sync with the browser’s Android version. Opera 15 pleases you with its appearance. It looks both, attractive and interactive.
Opera Next for Windows
The home page welcomes you with three tabs namely:
Speed Dial
It continues to sport a similar interface as seen in earlier version. Speed Dial helps you organize your most viewed sites. A search box has been added to the top and web pages can now also be categorized in folders. See the screen-shot below.
Stash
Stash collects interesting web pages and articles in one place and allows you to read them at a later time. All you need to do is enter the address of a website and hit the heart-shaped ‘Add to stash’ icon.
Once done, the stashed websites are represented by massive tiles. You can control the width and height of these tiles using a slider just adjacent to these websites.
Alternatively, if there are too many websites stashed, you can display them in a list format too.
Discover
The Discover tab presents you with curated content from multiple web sources covering a wide range of news topics . It lets you ‘discover’ content/news of your choice, depending on your location and interest. Categories such as Top News
- Business
- Entertainment
- Technology
- Sports
- Science
- Travel and more.
It exists to make your browsing easier. Every category presents the stories in form of a neat tile like interface. The section can be used to keep up with the content instead of navigating to a separate aggregation service, every time.
Besides, there’s an Off-Road (earlier known as Opera Turbo) mode present to compress data to speed up browsing when there is a slow internet connection.
Opera Next download
In all, Opera Next comes up as a decent alternative browser for Windows especially to Google’s Chrome & Firefox. No harm in trying it out and seeing of you like it!
