Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 vs Galaxy Grand Duos vs LG Nexus 5 Android Phone Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy Grand was easily one of the best selling Android smartphones after it’s launch, and the main reason for that was the pricing (it wasn’t really less, but in a range where Samsung doesn’t have any other decent devices). Then came the Nexus 5 which although was priced a little higher, was still one of the best choices for everyone for the fact that it comes from Google (although a different manufacturer), and it would run the latest software in it. Samsung refreshed the Grand series with a successor, theSamsung Galaxy Grand 2, which does look quite good and better (at least for us) than even the Nexus 5. Why? LG did a blunder with the White model of Nexus 5 where the entire front area except the earpiece is kept black and that makes it look quite odd. Also, the white is not really a white and is easily prone to attract dust and gets faded progressively.

Let us compare these three smartphones and see which one is actually a good choice when you talk of a smartphone that provides a good usage, of course in a standard pricing. If you wanted to compare only the two from Samsung, check out the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos vs Galaxy Grand 2.

As the trend of Samsung goes, the new Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 and Galaxy Grand Duos comes with curved edges with typical styling and standard design that is been practiced from quite a time now, but the Galaxy Grand Duos comes with the plastic back that most of the Samsung device have, where as the new Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 comes with a faux leather back with neat looking stitches around it providing better grip to the device, whereas the Nexus 5 come with a simple design and is also lightest handset of the lot, with curved edges giving a better grip and hold on the device. But as we said above, the color combination from LG for the Nexus 5 is quite a blunder.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has less bezel around the 5.25 inch screen compared to the Galaxy Grand Duos that has thicker bezel around its 5 inch display. The Nexus 5 also has a very thin bezel giving the device a classy look and finish for its 4.95 inch screen.

The Galaxy Grand 2 weights about 163 Grams and the Galaxy Grand duos weights 162 grams, there isn’t much difference between these two devices in terms of their weight but considering the larger display on the Grand 2, it is a clear winner over its predecessor. While the Nexus is comparatively much lighter than both these devices from Samsung, weighing just 130 grams. The thickness of the Galaxy Grand 2 is 8.9mm which is thinner than its predecessor who is 9.6mm thick and the Nexus 5 is marginally thinner than the Grand 2 with the thickness of 8.59mm that is 0.31 mm thinner. So with lesser weight and thinner size, the Nexus device is a clear to go option.

Display – Size, Resolution

The display on the Galaxy Grand 2 is bigger than the Galaxy Grand duos which in turn have bigger display than the Nexus 5, having the displays of 5.25 inch, 5 inch and 4.95 inch respectively. But in terms of the display the Nexus 5 has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels with FHD display, where as the Galaxy Grand 2 has the resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels with HD display and the Galaxy Grand duos has the resolution of 800 x 480 pixels with WVGA display.
Going to the Pixel density the Nexus 5 has a whooping 445 ppi where as the Galaxy Grand 2 have 280 ppi and the Galaxy Grand duos as just 187 ppi. There is no match in terms of the display and resolution of the Nexus 5 with the other two devices in the list.

With higher ppi and Google own interface we can easily expect the Nexus 5 to give a crisp brighter display that the other two devices. The internal memory on both the Samsung devices is same at 8 GB and the Nexus 5 has two variants of 16 GB and 32 GB of internal storage.

Internal Specifications

The chipset on the Galaxy grand duos is Brodcom BCM 28155, a cortex A9 with dual core clocking at 1.2 GHz where as the chipset in the Galaxy Grand 2 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, with quad-core Cortex A7, clocking at 1.2 GHz, where as in the case of the Nexus 5 it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, a Krait 400 quad-core clocking at 2.3 GHz.

Camera – Rear & Front

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 vs Grand vs Nexus 5 Cameras
There in not much difference between the cameras in both the Samsung devices as they have a rear camera of 8 MP with LED flash and front camera of 1.9 MP. The Nexus 5 features the same 8 MP camera on its rear with Optical Stabilization and a 1.3 MP camera on its front. More over the Nexus 5 has many camera features compared to the other two devices.

Slots for SIM, MicroSD

The Galaxy Grand 2 and Galaxy Grand Duos, both the devices from Samsung are dual SIM variants where the Galaxy Grand 2 has the SIM (micro SIMs) slots above the battery adjacent to each other and the Micro SD card slot is just above the SIM slots. In the Galaxy Grand Duos you can find the SIM slots one above and below the battery and the Micro SD card slot is under the batter, for which you need to remove the battery. In case of the Nexus 5 it just a single SIM variant and the SIM slot is on the side as you cannot open the body, and there is a fixed storage, so you won’t get to see a MicroSD card slot at all.

Pricing and Final Verdict

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 vs Grand vs Nexus 5
Presently the Galaxy Grand Duos is priced around Rs. 17,500 in India and the Galaxy Grand 2 is around Rs. 22,500 and the Nexus 5 is priced around Rs. 29,000 for 16 GB variant and Rs. 33,000 for the 32 GB variant. We cannot directly suggest one from here, because given the pricing, these differ a lot, and given the specs, the Nexus 5 is way ahead than the other two, especially for the 1080p display and the Snapdragon 800 processor, but if you are looking for something that doesn’t really hurt your pocket, and is still a decent one, then go for the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2, which does impress quite a bit, and for that pricing, you should really ignore the Grand Duos.
