How to make files from SkyDrive app offline or download permanently in Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 comes with a new SkyDrive app which has deep integration in your OS. All the files stored on your cloud storage by Microsoft i.e. SkyDrive can either be accessed from SkyDrive app or from SkyDrive folder in ‘This PC’ formerly known as ‘Computer’.
But, the SkyDrive shows the files directly from cloud storage and don’t download the files to your PC by default and there isn't a visible button to download files from SkyDrive. Although, no download button is present in SkyDrive app but, Microsoft has provided another option which lets you make the files available offline and those files can be accessed even when you are not connected to internet.
Where is the download button in SkyDrive?

SkyDrive app in Windows 8.1 don’t have a download button and it has been replaced with a ‘Make Offline’ button which downloads the files to your PC and lets you access even when you are not connected to an internet connection.
So, if you want to make the files stored in your SkyDrive available offline then, follow the instructions below.

Instructions:

  • First of all, open up the ‘SkyDrive’ app from Start Screen.
  • Once opened, you would see the files stored in your cloud storage. Select the files you want to make offline by right clicking them or tapping and holding them.
Tip: You can select multiple files to make offline.
  • Once selected, you would see the ‘Make offline’ button in the app bar. Press it.

  • You would be asked ‘Make this/these files available offline so you can open and edit them even when this PC isn’t connected to internet’ in a pop-up. Press ‘Make offline’.

  • Your files will start downloading and you can track their download progress by clicking on the downloading files link on top right corner of SkyDrive app.

  • Once downloaded, you would get the ‘Available offline’ written beside each file(s) you made offline.

  • Now, you won’t need an internet connection to access those files.

How can I access the files?
You might be wondering where the files are downloaded then, you are right. The files you made offline are stored in the SkyDrive folder and can be accessed from two different locations.
1- SkyDrive app:
You can access the files from your SkyDrive app by navigating to the location where the files were stored, originally. Pressing any file which was made offline can be opened like it was stored in your PC.
2- SkyDrive folder in This PC:
You can also access the files you made offline by going to ‘This PC’ formerly known as the Computer and then, SkyDrive folder from left navigation pane.

Here you would see all the files from your SkyDrive storage but, the files which were made offline can only be accessed from that folder while other would prompt to download using internet connection.
How to move/copy files from SkyDrive folder to another one in hard drive?
If you want to move the files from your SkyDrive folders which you made offline to another hard drive partition of your PC then, it’s also possible from two different methods.
Method 1 – SkyDrive app
  • If you prefer to use SkyDrive app then, simply navigate to the location where your files are stored in SkyDrive and select them by right click or tapping and holding them.
  • Once selected, you would get the options in the app bar. Press ‘Copy’.

  • Now, press the ‘SkyDrive’ name on top left corner (refer the image below) and select ‘This PC’ from drop down menu.

  • Here you would get the storage devices of your PC. Your hard drive partitions can also be accessed from there.
  • Simply navigate to the folder where you want to save the files and right click anywhere on the screen of swipe from bottom. Your app bar will open. Select ‘Paste’ and your files would be copied to that folder which can be accessed anytime even when you are offline.

Method 2 – SkyDrive folder
  • If you prefer to stay on desktop and still want to make your files offline then, simply go to ‘This PC’ and select ‘SkyDrive’ from left navigation pane. Your content of SkyDrive will open.
  • Here select the files you want to save to another location and simply copy them and paste them to the location where you want the files to be accessed. The saved files would be accessible offline.
